چکیده

Blood glucose levels are lower in tadpoles than adults. Transition to adult levels occurs during the later stages of metamorphosis, but the rise is interrupted by a brief decline in blood glucose at the beginning of metamorphic climax. Liver glycogen rises from 4.6% to 8% during larval life, falls to 1.7% at the beginning of metamorphic climax then returns to 5-770 during late climax and in the frog. Possible mechanisms responsible for the differences in carbohydrate regulation in larval and post metamorphic amphibians, and the biological significance of the differences are briefly discussed.

A comparison of adrenalin and glucagon effects on carbohydrate levels of larval and adult Rana pipiens.

Hyperglycemia was observed in frogs after single ip injections of doses above 50 &kg of adrenalin and glucagon. Blood glucose responses were maximal at 3 hr and lasted at least 5 hr. Lactacidemia was apparent after treatment with adrenalin at doses of 50 &kg and above. The increase in lactate was apparent by 1 hr and had dropped to control levels by 5 hr. Tissue giycogen loss was not observed a...

Factors affecting normal carbohydrate levels in Rana pipiens.

Variation in Rana pipiens blood glucose levels caused by assay techniques was at least 50% of basal levels. Increases caused by handling and anesthesia were as great as 200% for glucose and 800% for lactate. Dietary status induced variations as great as 100% in blood glucose and muscle glycogen and 600% in liver glycogen. Maximal seasonal differences (March to August) of approximately 50% for b...

Seasonal variation in the effects of adrenalin and glucagon in Rana pipiens.

It is abundantly clear that the carbohydrate reserves of anuran amphibians vary with the season (Byrne and White, 1975; Farrar, 1972; Hermansen and Jorgensen, 1969; Mizell, 1965; Smith, 1954). Liver and muscle glycogen levels are higher in late fall and winter than in late spring and summer, while blood sugar levels are generally higher in summer than in winter. In several species, the highest ...

Metabolic effects of dehydration on an aquatic frog, Rana pipiens.

Cellular responses to dehydration were analyzed in six organs of leopard frogs Rana pipiens. Frogs at 5 degrees C endured the loss of up to 50% of their total body water content but water contents of individual organs were strongly defended. Skeletal muscle water content was strongly affected by dehydration, dropping from 80.7% of wet mass in controls to 67.2% in frogs that had lost 50% of thei...

Enzymatic Regulation of Glycogenolysis in a Subarctic Population of the Wood Frog: Implications for Extreme Freeze Tolerance

The wood frog, Rana sylvatica, from Interior Alaska survives freezing at -16°C, a temperature 10-13°C below that tolerated by its southern conspecifics. We investigated the hepatic freezing response in this northern phenotype to determine if its profound freeze tolerance is associated with an enhanced glucosic cryoprotectant system. Alaskan frogs had a larger liver glycogen reserve that was mob...
